Man involved in Melvin shooting found dead in Newfoundland

One of the three men charged in the shooting of Jimmy Melvin Jr. a year and a half ago has turned up dead in Newfoundland.
The remains of Daniel Borden were found Sunday off a highway on Newfoundland’s east coast, and police there are calling it a murder.
“The chief medical examiner here in St. John’s determined that the victim died as a result of a shooting,” says Borden.
Borden was one of the three suspects arrested after Melvin Jr. was shot in the Cowie Hill area in December 2008.
Borden’s mother, Ann Duffy, says she talked to him a few days before he disappeared in March.
“Well last night when I heard, I was a basket case for hours,” she says.
Duffy says Borden didn’t indicate he may be in danger.
“No, and he and his lawyer were willing and ready to go to court and deal with whatever the charges are that he is up on here,” says Duffy.
Borden was facing a charge of accessory after the fact in the Melvin shooting. He was sent to a halfway house in Newfoundland until his court appearance.
Police can’t say if the Melvin incident and Borden’s death in Newfoundland are related.
