Jennifer Horne murder trial scheduled to begin today

After several delays, the Jennifer Horne murder trial starts today.
Desmond Maguire, 39, and his common-law wife Ashley Haley, 22, are charged with first degree murder in the death of the 20-year-old Cole Harbour woman.
The trial starts with jury selection.
On New Year’s Eve 2007, Horne was sexually assaulted and her throat was slit.
Police found her body in a closet in Maguire and Haley’s Dartmouth apartment.
Lawyers for the couple argued unsuccessfully last month that the trial should be heard by a judge alone, or that it be held outside Halifax because of the intense media coverage.
The victim’s family has often expressed frustration at delays in getting the case to trial.
