World Cup fever hits Halifax

The first FIFA World Cup ever held in Africa opened today in a dazzling burst of joy, colour and noise, and Haligonians are escaping the work week to join the horn-blowing crowds at local sports bars.
At Bubba Rays in downtown Halifax, only a few dozen people could make it to the match between Mexico and host team South Africa.
“I’m going to be here for as many as I can,” says Matt. “The more time I can get off of work, I’ll be here watching every game.”
He says Italy will take home the cup, however he and Adan were rooting for Mexico today. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
At another table, Justin says it’s the Netherlands’ turn.
“We just have the best players, that’s it,” says Justin. “We’ve never won it before so it’s going to be the first time. We’re in Africa and Africa used to be Dutch.”
England will meet the U.S. on the pitch Saturday.
