Questions are being raised about the ownership of lighthouses on National Historic Sites and the future of some of the province’s iconic tourist destinations remain in doubt.
It’s not known if Parks Canada will take ownership of the George’s Island and Louisbourg lighthouses, which are both on National Historic Sites.
Premier Darrell Dexter says he doesn’t know what the future holds.
“Each one of these lighthouses are likely going to find themselves in different circumstances,” said Dexter.
He says it’s too early to say if Parks Canada would be willing to commit to the lighthouses on their sites.
“It would look like the responsibility would literally shift from one department to another department within the federal government,” he said. “So those are the kinds of questions that I think are going to continue to be raised around this divestment program.”
Dexter says there needs to be a lot of negotiations before any solutions are found.
He says the situation with Peggy’s Cove remains a work in progress.
