Top fire officials sue online commenters

Two senior Halifax fire officials are suing seven people, including two former Halifax firefighters, who made anonymous online comments about The Coast newspaper’s story on racism within the fire department.

Fire Chief Bill Mosher and Deputy Chief Stephen Thurber filed the statement of claim Wednesday.

They are claiming the comments were defamatory. They are going after two current employees of the Halifax regional fire service, two former firefighters and three others.

The identities of the commenters were released to Mosher and Thurber’s legal counsel after they filed for a court order against The Coast and the internet providers involved in managing the site.

No statement of defence has been filed.

Blair Cromwell, a black firefighter who launched a human rights complaint against the department, is named in the lawsuit
