Warning notices are going out to residents in HRM about the spate of recent bear sightings.
More than 900 pamphlets advising residents about why bears are roaming into yards are being handed out by the Department of Natural Resources.
The department’s Jenny Costello says there has been a noticeable increase in bear sightings since HRM began the green bin program.
“Once the recycling bins were started up in certain areas in 2001 the bear complaints definitely started going up,” she says.
Two bears have been trapped so far this year in the Metro Halifax area. They’ve been taken to remote areas and released into the wild. But, if the same bear is caught more than once, it is usually destroyed.
