Councillors move forward on wind energy

HRM is moving ahead with wind power.
Regional councillors approved a motion yesterday to hold public hearings on regulations for wind turbines.
Planning staff have come up with proposals for rules governing where turbines can be located and how far away they have to be from houses.
A senior city planner says the turbines would not be allowed in densely populated areas of HRM. In rural areas, they would have to be at least 550 metres from the nearest inhabited building.
The Herald reports staff are also asking councillors to approve an “as of right” approach to turbine construction – which means blanket approval for any project that conforms to regulations, rather than approving each proposal individually.
The issue goes to council committees next month.
