EMO, residents, ready for Earl’s arrival

The provincial Emergency Management Office says it’s ready for Hurricane Earl – and with the storm just a day away, it seems Halifax residents are busy getting ready too.
Emergency Management Minister Ramona Jennex says her department has been making preparations to handle any and all complications Earl will cause when it arrives in the Maritimes.
“EMO has been in contact with all organizations and businesses,” she said. “They’ve been in contact with Nova Scotia Power, everyone’s plans are up and ready.”
It seems plenty of people have heeded warnings to assemble an emergency kit in case Earl causes prolonged power outages. A long lineup snaked through the parking lot of the Bayers Road Costco on Thursday, where shoppers were waiting to get their propane tanks filled.
Most in the lineup said they were also planning to pick up other emergency supplies like water, batteries and canned food.
Jeff Coles says he heard the warnings earlier this week, but normally waits until hurricanes get close to get ready.
“I’ve been following the storm track,” he said. “It’s a couple days before I start really preparing. It’s always at the back of my mind though.”
People visiting the province are also getting some extra protection. Jennex says the large digital signs on the Cobequid Pass are displaying a message warning tourists about the impending storm.
