MacKay skeptical about new convention centre

The proposed new convention centre in downtown Halifax didn’t escape discussion at the Nova Scotia Tory convention this weekend.

Defense Minister Peter MacKay, the lone Nova Scotia cabinet minister in the Harper government, says he’s skeptical about the project.

He tells the Herald, in projects like the Commonwealth Games, his government has been bitten after serving up funding and their support only to have the project nixed.

Premier Darrell Dexter says the province will be looking for a $47 million contribution from the federal government and had said through talks with MacKay, the minister supported the idea.

Meanwhile, the project still also hinges on city council’s decision, which is coming November 9.
