Diver captures close encounter with shark on video

A commercial diver working in the Bay of Fundy got a lot more than the footage he set out to capture last week – and now he’s captured international attention.

Scott MacNichol was working with his underwater camera off Eastport, Maine when he was attacked by a 2.5-metre long porbeagle shark.

He tells CTV it was a harrowing experience.

“Surprised to see it, and scared once I saw its teeth and saw it come at me,” he said. “You can’t tell from viewing the video, but I did scream, right underwater.”

MacNichol says the shark seemed a lot more interested in his camera than him, and he wasn’t hurt.

He says he’s not worried about continuing to dive in the bay.

“It’d be like winning megabucks, or being struck by lightning, the chances of me ever seeing one again in the water,” he said.

He’s been sharing his story, and the footage, with media outlets around the world – but says he’s happy to get back to his job.
