Holy Angels high school closing

Atlantic Canada’s only all-girls public high school is closing.

Holy Angels high school in Sydney will be shut down in June.

The school’s 300 students were told of the closure Friday, after a last-ditch bid to save the school failed.

The Roman Catholic order that owns the school had hoped a buyer would renew the school’s lease with the school board, but the talks collapsed over projected maintenance costs.

Principal Theresa MacKenzie says about 200 students in grades 10 and 11 will be sent to other schools in the Sydney area.

The school was founded in 1885 by the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame.
