Making the winter parking ban road kill

Metro’s controversial winter parking ban is over for 2011 and one regional councillor is working toward changing the policy before the 2012 ban comes into effect this December. Councillor Dawn Sloan (Halifax Downtown) says there are several reasons why this issue will remain a priority through the spring, summer and fall. “The slowing down of economics in the downtown at night,” Sloan told News 95.7. “Individuals wanting to move to the peninsula but not being able to find or secure a parking spot. All these things are harming our investment in HRM By Design. So, of course, it’s top in my priority. A staff report will be presented to the City’s standing committee on transportation, which is meeting March 24. It will detail alternatives to the ban including the ‘no snow, no ban’ approach, parking on alternating sides of the roads and different rules for urban, suburban and rural areas. If changes are agreed to, the committee would send a letter to the Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Renewal asking for changes to be made to the provincial legislation. Since the ban was lifted on Friday, Sloan says she’s received numerous emails asking what will happen next in the effort to kill the ban.
