Royal Wedding merchandise is hotter than ever

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Royalty collectors love the memorabilia that accompanies an historic wedding. One shiny treasure in particular is being snapped up around the world.
“The 2011 Royal Wedding coins from the Royal Mint in the UK is certainly proving popular with royalty buffs,” says Brian Grant-Duff with All-Nations Stamp & Coin in Vancouver, adding only 50,000 of the silver coins were issued for the world market, and they’re a little different from what’s been minted in the past.
“It actually shows the royals equal — at the same height — which isn’t always done with men and women,” he describes. “And [they’re] looking into each others’ eyes lovingly. That’s really the first time English monarchs have appeared that way on a coin.
Grant-Duff says one Royal Wedding commemorative five pound silver crown sells for around $100. But people coming into his store remain fascinated with past weddings. “Anything with Princess Diana remains popular.”
“It’s 30 years since her wedding and this is one of her sons getting married,” he notes. “So, you can easily see the historic tie-ins there.”
He says the Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech has renewed interest in the monarchy. Up for auction at his store this weekend is an original wrapped newspaper from the coronation of King George the Sixth.
