Scammers target international students

Halifax Regional Police say international students are being targetted in our city by scammers. In one scam, students got phone calls months ago from people claiming to be from a computer company and asking for info about hard drives and laptops. Then, a few months later, another phone call comes saying the student has won a prize from the computer company. The catch is the student is told they have to send in money in order to get their winnings.
Police say at least twice, students sent money and received nothing in return.
The second scam is a typical phone gotcha game. In these cases, international students, mostly Chinese, get calls from people offering them free long-distance calling. The catch in this case is they have to give over valuable personal information first.
Police say never give out that type of info on the phone or to businesses you haven’t accurately checked out first. They also say “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
