Nexus members tried smuggling goods: Report

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – A new report suggests more than 100 Nexus travellers attempted to smuggle goods into Canada illegally during the last six months of 2010. In many cases they did not initially declare the items then later admitted to attempting to smuggle them.
The goods included a $16,000 engagement ring, a set of tires installed on a car that was crossing the border and a boat attached to a trailer.
Customs and Immigration Union president Ron Moran says the federal government needs to hire more border guards to catch these people. “If you are running a program like Nexus and you don’t have enough resources to undertake an acceptable level of compliance verification, then it becomes a very dangerously precarious situation,” he explains.
The Nexus program makes border patrol more efficient by allowing guards to move people, who have already undergone security clearances, to pass through customs quicker.
