Canucks blanked by Rangers

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Forty saves from Henrik Lundqvist and four goals in the third period from the visiting team led to a 4-0 loss for the Vancouver Canucks at the hands of the New York Rangers.
Lundqvist was stellar through the first two periods as he stopped all 28 shots Vancouver fired his way which gave his team enough time to find their legs. The two teams stayed scoreless through the first two periods with the Canucks outshooting the Rangers 28-9.
In the third period it was a totally different New York team. 2:22 into the final frame Mike Rupp finally opened the scoring and that seemed to open the floodgates.
Ryan McDonagh, Brian Boyle and Marian Gaborik added goals before all was said and done as Roberto Luongo stopped just 15 shots of the 19 he faced.
The Canucks had several chances to get on the board but couldn’t find a way to beat Lundqvist. They were 0-for-8 on the powerplay, including a string of six in a row.
Lundqvist had to be fantastic to keep the Rangers in the game and stopped 40 shots for his 36th career shutout. Kevin Bieksa noted that the Swedish goaltender was the main difference for New York.
“You can’t really outplay a team any more than we did for 50 minutes there, he made a lot of great saves and we got numerous scoring chances. We’re kicking ourselves we couldn’t put a few past him,” said the Canucks blueliner.
Before the game got underway the team paid tribute to Rick Rypien who passed away over the summer. The ceremony saw Bieksa give one of Rypien’s game-worn jerseys from last season to family members who were in attendance.
The Canucks will be back in action on Thursday night when they host the Nashville Predators at 7 p.m.
