Navy investigating ship-dock collision

The navy is investigating after one of its ships hit a dry dock in Halifax harbour.
Defence Minister Peter MacKay says an investigation shouldn’t take more than a week to complete.
“Clearly a fender bender with a ship that size, you can see extensive damage. We hope that that is not the case but until we get a full assessment I really couldn’t say more than that,” MacKay told reporters Monday.
A navy spokesperson says the supply ship HMCS Preserver was making a turn in the harbour when its front end struck the dock, owned by the Irving Shipyard, Friday.
“It’s an unfortunate thing to have happen, but if it’s going to happen anywhere I’d rather it happen at the Irving Shipyard where they can get to work and fix it right away,” said MacKay.
He said the ship has been damaged above the waterline. There is a dent in the ship and a hole in the dock.
No one on the ship or on land was hurt.
HMCS Preserver just underwent a $44.7 million refit.
