Dal faculty ratifies contract

Members of the Dalhousie Faculty Association have voted 95 per cent in favour of an agreement with the administration.
They’ve ratified the three-year deal for 875 faculty, professional librarians and psychologists and counsellors.
“I am pleased to say that of the 633 votes cast, 95 per cent were in favour of the deal,” said DFA President Anthony Stewart. “More than 73 per cent of those Member eligible to vote did so.”
The deal, retroactive to July 1, 2011, gives cost-of-living increases of 1.25% in each of the first two years, and 1.75% increase in the third year. Members will increase their contributions to the pension plan by 2% starting in 2012-13.
“Even though the Province exempt university pension plans from the solvency test, the DFA pledged to increase our pension contributions in order to maintain the health of the plan,” says Dr. Stewart. “This increase in contributions reflects that commitment and we were pleased to see the Board of Governor’s offer to offset that increase.”
In a separate dispute, the union that represents support staff at Dalhousie University says its workers could walk off the job on Thursday. Negotiations will resume on Tuesday.
