Human remains found on hiking trail identified

Halifax Regional Police have identified the remains found off a hiking trail near Fox Lake earlier this month.

Police say the remains are those of Ray Peter O’Connell, who was reported missing in June 2004. He was 32 years old at the time of his disappearance.

“We don’t have an exact cause of death, but at this point, based on the information we have, we’re not treating this matter as suspicious,” said Cst. Brian Palmeter. “Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are extended to Ray’s friends and family.”

The remains were found May 6 around 11 a.m. by a hiker on the newly-created trail.

“As I understand it, this trail is being created as we speak,” said Palmeter. “As the trail was created, it was the person doing so was the one who discovered the remains. So it’s not an area the public would have had access to, prior to this trail being created.”

The lake is about a kilometre west of Highway 102 near the Sherwood Heights neighbourhood
