Tall ships sail out of Halifax

The tall ships have left the Halifax Harbour, but not before putting on a display in the Parade of Sail.

Thousands of on-lookers came out Monday afternoon for one last glance at the vessels.

“I’m sad to see them go,” said Nancy who was watching the procession along the Halifax Waterfront. “It’s too bad we can’t have this about eight months of the year, instead of one week a year.”

John was also in the crowd of thousands packed along the waterfront Monday afternoon. He says the Tall Ships Festival is always the highlight of his summer when it comes to Halifax.

“I actually booked off last week and today knowing that the tall ships were coming,” he said. “It’s something I always look forward to when I knew it was coming back this year.”

The Halifax Waterfront was packed every day of the five-day festival. Parking lots were full, the boardwalk was crowded, concerts were sold out, and vendors were busy, busy, busy!

Mary is the manager of Vogue Fashions along the waterfront, and says business has been great over the past week.

“It’s picked up a lot,” she says. “There’s been a lot of traffic, a lot of people coming and going along the board walk here. So people would drop in that normally don’t drop in.”

When the tall ships were here last in 2009, the economic spin-off from the event was estimated at $32-million. Mary thinks this year’s event will beat that.

“I would say so, by the amount of people that were on that waterfront,” she said. “We were much busier this year.”

The ships are now headed for Lunenburg, and will also stop in Shelburne, Pictou, Port Hawkesbury and Pugwash before leaving Nova Scotia.
