Phone scam targets Halifax immigrants

Someone’s trying to squeeze new Canadians for money through intimidation.

A man tells Halifax Regional Police he got a call late last month from a man identifying himself as a member of the Canadian Border Services Agency.

The caller, whose caller-ID showed a 1-800 number, told the victim that he and his family were about to be deported to their country of origin if he did not wire a bunch of money overseas.

The man went ahead and sent the money, then called police.

Police encourage any other scam victims to call the Integrated Financial Crime unit at 902-490-1985.
