Dartmouth dad says waterfront “Wave” unsafe

A Dartmouth man wants the “Wave” on the waterfront to be safer after his 3-year-old son fell off the sculpture.

Ian Palmer says as soon as his child spotted the public art installation, he kicked off his shoes and ran for it.

The toddler climbed to the top and fell off the other side before he could be caught.

The boy was taken to hospital suffering minor injuries.

Palmer is calling on council and the Waterfront Development Corporation to install some sort of rail or barrier on top of the wave to prevent future falls.

Last summer the city installed a rubber surface along the base to help stop people from hurting themselves.

Halifax Regional Municipality spokesperson Tiffany Chase says despite warning signs, people continue to climb the piece of public art.

She adds it’s difficult to strike a balance between public enjoyment of the sculpture, and safety.

“The only other option would be to remove it entirely, and of course that’s not something we’re looking to do at this point”, says Chase.
