HALIFAX – Halifax police say they believe a 71-year-old man who had been missing for almost two weeks went overboard from a ferry crossing to Newfoundland.

In a statement Saturday, police say James Cuthbert boarded the ferry in North Sydney, N.S., but did not get off in Port aux Basques, N.L., on Oct. 26.

Staff Sgt. Reid McCoombs says foul play is not suspected and police have ended their search.

Cuthbert’s car was found near the Cape Breton ferry terminal Thursday and police viewed video evidence, leading them to believe he boarded the vessel for the nighttime crossing.

Cuthbert was last seen by family at his home outside Halifax on the morning of Oct. 26.
