Parking ban violators compounding snow woes

Narrow streets and slippery sidewalks are still prevalent around the region as Halifax braces for more snow Friday.

HRM’s superintendent of winter works Darrin Natalino told The Rick Howe Show cars violating the parking ban have been disrupting their efforts to widen roads.

“Whether we put out a PSA urging folks not to park there, or whether we impose the ban, cars are still there many times,”  he said.

Natalino said in one instance, after leaving temporary ‘no parking’ signs on a street leading up to overnight snow removal operations, they found 31 cars parked there.

He said it would take hours to tow vehicles left on city streets, and that’s time they don’t have during the narrow window of the parking ban.

He added often during challenging conditions, tow trucks aren’t available to remove cars because they are pulling vehicles out of ditches and cleaning up after collisions.

Halifax will enforce the winter parking ban overnight from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.

Vehicles must be off municipal streets during these hours, those not moved risk being ticketed or towed.

The city says crews need to address many remaining trouble spots across the region before tomorrow’s snowfall, and another storm that could bring up to 30 centimetres on Sunday.

They say so far this week, crews have removed approximately 1,365 dump truck loads of snow.
