Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada continues in Halifax

Halifax’s first time hosting Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada continues today.

Ron MacLean told News 95.7 the next few days are jam-packed with all things hockey, including a skate with the Stanley Cup this morning, and a concert tonight at Spatz Theatre tonight featuring Theo Fleury, the Barra MacNeils, Buck 65, Corb Lund, Rich Aucoin and more.

“Basic idea is they write hockey tunes, so a great concert [tonight], the luncheon on Friday, then the show is at the Oval for most of the hosting during the day Saturday. There’s lots of NHL games, lots of grassroots storytelling, then Sunday we do Hometown Hockey.”

MacLean said the whole thing is a “can’t miss experience.”

“Look at us, this is just a bunch of rink rats. That is the simple magic, that we are just all one. So that’s what I see in this tour.”

Today, alumni celebrities Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Mark Napier and Darcy Tucker came out to Ross Road Elementary and Juinor High to show off the Stanley Cup.

Tucker said Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada is one of his favourite annual events.

“We’re happy to be here,” he said. “I think Halifax is a great spot to have Hockey Day.”

Grade seven ringette player Jaime Spicer said seeing the cup was pretty special, but what she loved most about today was the hockey spirit.

“It’s kind of nice to see our whole school come together,” she said.

Campbell-Pascall said for her, the week is a celebration of grass roots hockey.

“I can’t even imagine if this would’ve ever happened to the school that I went to,” she said. “To have all these NHL players and Olympians and the Stanley Cup, I mean, this is something they’re pretty much going to remember for the rest of their lives.”

Sixth-grade Katelyn said she was feeling pretty excited after catching a glimpse of Lord Stanley.

“Seeing the Stanley Cup and all the people I’ve never dreamed of seeing, it’s like a one-time thing, so I’m just happy I got to see them.”

The students at Ross Road even custom-designed suits for Don Cherry and Ron MacLean — a Canada tartan one for Don, and a Nova Scotia tartan one for Ron.

Napier said he was impressed with the amount of effort the students put in to today’s event.

“It looks like they’ve been working very, very hard with their decorations and drawings and everything they’ve done, and it’s really neat.”

This year marks the fifteenth edition of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, and our city’s first time hosting it.

Last night, opening ceremonies were held at the Halifax Forum followed by a game of shinny where Team Ron MacLean faced off against Team Wendel Clark.

Team Ron MacLean scored a last minute goal to win 8-7.

News 95.7’s resident ringer Rick Howe, who hadn’t laced up in over 12-years, was on the team and said he was just happy he survived.

“I wasn’t sure I was going to make it,” said Rick.

Rick then reported he was going home to sleep.
