Healthy Tomorrow Foundation encourages Nova Scotians to keep moving this winter

The Healthy Tomorrow Foundation wants to get Nova Scotians moving.

The Doctors Nova Scotia charity's latest project is called Make Your Move.

“We really want to create a culture where, in Nova Scotia, movement is the norm and people incorporate it into their everyday lives,” explained the group's executive director, Kerry Copeland.

She told NEWS 95.7 fill-in host Jordi Morgan you don't necessarily need to join a gym, take up jogging or sign up for a sport, because all movement is valuable.

“We want Nova Scotians to appreciate that you can achieve health benefits even from small bouts of physical activity through your day,” she said.

“So common housework, shovelling, taking the dog for a walk, taking the stairs instead of the escalator, or if you're at work, standing up during phone calls.”

Many people equate physical activity with weight loss, but Copeland said the benefits go well beyond the scale.

“Increased energy, effectively coping with stress, anxiety and even depression, having a stronger body, giving you the opportunity to socialize with others, not to mention reducing the risk of chronic disease,” she said.

The Healthy Tomorrow Foundation has partnered with Recreation Nova Scotia on their Take the Roof Off Winter contest, which generally involves submitting a photo or video of you and/or your friends and family doing a winter activity.

“Join Nova Scotians in celebrating the fact that, even though it may be cold outside, even though there may be snow on the ground, you can still get active,” said Copeland.
