Price tag for Halifax Forum redevelopment jumps nearly $30M

The cost of redeveloping a nearly century-old arena in Halifax’s north end has gone up.

A staff report heading to regional council Tuesday says the Halifax Forum redevelopment project will cost an estimated $110 million. That’s about $30 million more than the estimate from two years ago.

The plan, which staff is recommending, would include the forum’s multipurpose space being expanded, a park added to the land and a much smaller parking footprint.

Staff also says the city could sell off a lot near Young and Windsor streets to developers to offset the price tag.

Another option is to demolish the nearly 100-year-old forum, but staff says that’s a risk to the city’s reputation as the building has heritage status.
