N.S. woman charged with causing distress to 11 animals

By CityNews Halifax Staff

A woman from Canso is facing charges in connection with permitting 11 animals to be in distress.

According to Nova Scotia SPCA, 68-year old Maureen Davis is scheduled to appear in court in February on alleged charges under the Animal Protection Act of Nova Scotia.

The charges stem from a complaint the SPCA received in September about ten dogs and one cat living in a home under unsanitary conditions.

Orders to comply were given, and upon inspection on Nov. 7, due to non-compliance, the animals were seized.

On Nov. 28, Davis appeared in front of the Nova Scotia Animal Welfare Appeal Board to appeal the seizure but board members found that the seizure was reasonable and carried out appropriately under the Animal Protection Act of Nova Scotia and seized the animals.

Davis is scheduled to appear in Antigonish Provincial Court on Feb. 28, 2024.
