Classes canceled in HRM as storm moves away from region

The snowfall warning and blowing snow advisory that was in effect for HRM and the surrounding area have been lifted. Preliminary reports show 70+ cm of snow had fallen at Halifax Stanfield between Friday and early Monday morning, and municipal crews and residents continue to dig out.

Monday’s forecast is calling for flurries through the day with winds gusting to 50 km/h, which Environment Canada says could created blowing snow and impact visibility.

All HRCE schools and HRM colleges and universities cancelled classes on Monday to allow for snow clearing to continue. HRM says work continues to keep priority one streets open, and work is also underway on priority two streets, and are asking people to not leave their vehicles on the streets during the day as it impedes snow clearing efforts

A decision is expected this morning on resuming Halifax Transit service after it was pulled off the streets Sunday night, the second stoppage of the weekend.

The situation in Cape Breton is much more severe as that region saw well over 80 cm of show, prompting officials there to declare a local state of emergency, with CBRM Mayor Amanda McDougall pleading with residents there to stay off the roads.
