Wildcats tame Mooseheads in overtime

Halifax welcomed Dylan MacKinnon and the Moncton Wildcats to the Scotiabank Centre Thursday night for the second time this season. The first match between the two teams in Halifax ended in a 5-1 Wildcats win.

The Mooseheads returned fire and netted a goal of their own only a minute later, Brady Schultz finding Carlos Handel from the right faceoff circle through traffic and scoring his 1st goal at the Scotiabank Centre. Shawn Carrier was credited with the secondary assist.

Lou Levesque was awarded a penalty shot about 15 minutes into the first period, but Jacob Steinman stood tall for Moncton, denying Levesque a goal and keeping the game tied at one.

Braedon MacPhee gave the Herd an early lead in the second period, receiving a long pass from Jan Sprynar before powering his way to the front of the Wildcats net and firing a shot up high to beat Steinman 1:55 into the frame.

The Wildcats tied the game as 2025 NHL draft prospect Caleb Desnoyers ripped a shot past Rousseau 8:22 into the final frame.

The game required overtime to determine a winner, and Julius Sumpf beat Mathis Rousseau 1:17 into the overtime period to give Moncton the win and extend the Wildcats’ win streak to 5.

With the loss, the Herd’s record falls to 10-13-4 while Moncton increases their record to 21-4-2.

Mooseheads veteran Braedon MacPhee was awarded the first star for his one-goal performance, Caleb Desnoyers received the second star, and Julius Sumpf earned the third star for his OT winner.
