Mooseheads lose to Saint John in overtime to extend winless streak

On Saturday, the Mooseheads began their weekend home and home series against Nate Tivey and the Saint John Sea Dogs at the Scotiabank Centre, with the Herd still looking for their first win of the new year.

Saint John returned fire on the powerplay as Olivier Groulx redirected a shot past Jacob Steinman. Braedon MacPhee restored the Herd’s lead, capitalizing on a rebound and burying the puck into a wide-open Sea Dogs net. Saint John ensured the period ended tied as Olivier Groulx added his second of the game.

Saint John scored the lone goal in the second period as Olivier Groulx completed his hat trick in the dying seconds of the period to give the Sea Dogs the lead going into the final frame of regulation.

The Herd retied the game 6:09 into the third period as Owen Philips scored in his first game since returning from an injury he sustained on Dec. 30, beating Gravel over the blocker.

The third period remained scoreless and overtime was needed to determine the contest’s winner. Into extra time, Tyler Peddle hammered a shot past Steinman on the powerplay to end Saint John’s five-game losing streak.

With the overtime loss, the Herd earned a point, and they are now sitting at 11-21-6, while the Sea Dogs improved to 17-21-0.
