Oakfield Beach closure lifted after toxin tests

A popular Halifax-area beach has reopened after testing confirmed blue-green algae levels are within safe limits.

Oakfield Beach was closed on July 16 after a suspected algae bloom was observed. On Monday, Halifax Regional Municipality said tests showed the toxin levels in the lake are within Health Canada guidelines.

According to HRM, when a blue-green algae bloom or mat is observed, the beach is closed and initial testing is conducted to determine whether the bloom is toxin-producing. If it is not, no further testing is required, and the beach can reopen.

If the bloom is found to be toxin-producing, additional testing is carried out. The beach remains closed until the bloom disappears and post-bloom test results confirm toxin levels are within Health Canada’s safety guidelines.
