Mooseheads strike early, beating Charlottetown 5-2

A strong first period powered the Halifax Mooseheads to a 5-2 win over the Charlottetown Islanders at Scotiabank Centre.
Halifax struck early in the opening frame as Danny Walters recovered a puck in open ice and ripped a shot past Donald Hickey at 1:56. Shawn Carrier added to the lead on the power play, taking a pass from Owen Phillips and blasting a one-timer from the right faceoff circle.
Cameron Minella then fired a shot from the point that deflected off a defender and lit the lamp to extend the Mooseheads’ lead to three.
In the second period, Charlottetown responded as William Shields and Brady Peddle both scored to cut the Halifax lead to one.
Quinn Kennedy countered early in the third, firing a one-timer off a pass from Phillips into the Islanders’ net. Patrick McNab added an empty-netter at 16:12, catching Hickey as he was pulled to seal the victory for Halifax.
With the win, Halifax improves to 15-10-1-1 on the season.
The Mooseheads swept the three stars as Carrier earned first star with a goal and an assist, Phillips was awarded second star with three assists, and Owen Bresson took third star with 28 saves in the win.
Halifax will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 13, when they face the Moncton Wildcats at Avenir Centre.
