Anti-gambling advocate happy to see ALC lawsuit moving forward

HALIFAX – The Atlantic Lottery Corporation is facing a class action lawsuit over what advocates are saying is a predatory and deceitful business.

The suit was recently certified by the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador and an anti-gambling advocate says that it’s about time.

The lawsuit claims that video lottery terminals deceive players into thinking they can win more money than they actually can.

Anti-gambling advocate Terry Fulmer says video lottery terminals are predatory and that more regulations need to be put in place to protect players.

“Addicts, when they come to the final decision that they need help or need to step away from this, they have nothing left,” said Fulmer. “They have no self-confidence, no self-belief, and they’re told to go over and go to counselling by the very government and very institution that has taken all their money away.”

He said he is glad the courts are beginning to recognize this as a problem.

The lawsuit is being represented by Ches Crosibe Barristers, and according to them around 30,000 VLT users can benefit if they win.
