Municipality shuts down Lake Echo Beach to swimming

By CityNews Halifax Staff

Lake Echo Beach has been closed to swimming after high bacteria levels were found in the water.

In a release, Halifax Regional Municipality says the water quality at all supervised municipal beaches is rested regularly and, as a result, the beach in Lake Echo is showing levels of bacteria that exceed Health Canada swimming guidelines.

The municipality says it will advise residents when the beach reopens.

High bacteria levels can be caused by a number of factors, including dogs, birds, wildlife and impacts from climate change, such as high temperatures, lower water levels and decreased rainfall.
