Shelburne RCMP seize firearms after standoff with Westphal man

Shelburne RCMP have charged a 28-year-old Westphal man after executing a search warrant at a residence in Shelburne on Feb. 3.

Liam Colin Cockerill has been charged with 21 offences, including assault, possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of a loaded firearm, and careless storage of firearms. He has been remanded into custody, and the investigation is ongoing.

The case was first opened with a report of an assault with a weapon at a Shelburne home on Jan. 17, where the suspect reportedly assaulted an individual and fled before police arrived.

Despite efforts to locate and arrest Cockerill, he remained at large. On Feb. 3, RCMP confirmed that Cockerill was at a residence in Shelburne and set up containment of the area.

With support from the Nova Scotia RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT), Crisis Negotiation Team, and Police Dog Services, Cockerill was safely arrested at approximately 9 p.m.

During a search of the home, police seized two firearms and a variety of ammunition.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Shelburne RCMP.
