As the lifespan of the MacKay Bridge reaches its end, Halifax Harbour Bridges is trying to determine what’s next.
The bridge opened in 1970, and it was designed with a lifespan of roughly 50 years.
It’s been five years since the end of the lifespan and Steven Proctor with HHB tells CityNews, they’re looking at their options.
“The options are rehabilitate the existing bridge, continue on with maintenance with some other option down the road, or look at construction of a new bridge or a tunnel, and since 2018, Halifax Harbour Bridges has looked at eight options where a new bridge could be located,” Proctor said.
Proctor says no decisions have been made at this time, adding maintenance work on the bridge will continue to take place in the meantime with a weekend closure scheduled for July 25, one of four expected this year.
He says the option of building a new bridge could take roughly 10 years from the time the bridge is tendered to the actual time of construction, with the construction taking roughly four or five years.
