Nova Scotia’s police watchdog has laid sexual assault charges against a now-retired RCMP officer.
In a media release, the Serious Incident Response Team says the incidents are alleged to have occurred while the officer was with the RCMP and after his retirement.
Retired Sgt. Darrell W. Johnson was charged Wednesday with three counts of sexual assault and is expected to appear in a Port Hawkesbury courtroom next month.
In a statement following the SiRT announcement, the commanding officer for the RCMP in Nova Scotia says the charges are “deeply distressing.”
“The RCMP remains steadfast in its commitment to integrity and accountability,” reads a statement from Dennis Daley. “We take all allegations of misconduct seriously, and our members are expected to uphold – and surpass – the high standards rightly demanded by Canadians.”
According to the RCMP, Johnson served with the RCMP in Nova Scotia from 2002 until his retirement in 2023.
