Head of N.S. Power shuffled out amid ongoing cyberattack questions

The province’s private electric utility is moving its president to a new position amid ongoing issues with the public.

Effective March 1, Peter Gregg will be leaving his current role as president and CEO and transitioning to parent company Emera’s executive vice president of strategy and policy. He will lead corporate strategy, government relations and corporate sustainability and environment.

In a statement on the Nova Scotia Power website, the new role will have Gregg “building on his deep expertise in the energy sector, his background in strategy and policy and high-level company leadership.”

The move comes at a difficult time for the utility as it is about to undergo a two-part inquiry led by the province’s energy regulator, which is seeking answers to last year’s cyberattack that exposed the personal information of some 280,000 customers.

His replacement Viivek Sood, a senior leader with Sobeys and the Empire group of companies as well as a Nova Scotia Power board member since June 2024, will take the helm as the utility continues to seek approval of a residential rate hike of about eight per cent by next year.

As Nova Scotia’s primary electricity provider in the province, the company provides generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical power to approximately 550,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers.
