Storm knocks out power to thousands in Halifax area (update)

Tens of thousands of Nova Scotians were without power early Thursday as a storm continued to blow through the province.
As of 9:00 a.m., Nova Scotia Power was reporting around 70,000 customers were in the dark. More than 9,000 of those customers were in the Halifax area, with outages reported in the Lower Sackville and St. Margaret's Bay areas.
Restoration estimates varied from later Thursday morning to Thursday night.
The outages are being blamed on a storm passing over Nova Scotia, bringing with it wind gusts of up to 100 km/h and some 50 mm of rain.
Nova Scotia Power has activated its Emergency Operations Centre and says it has 300 field workers restoring power across the province.
Rainfall and wind warnings issued by Environment Canada have now been cancelled.
Environment Canada says the rain and wind will taper off through Thursday morning.
Other impacts
Halifax Stanfield International Airport is asking people to check ahead to ensure there are no delays to their flights as the wind is impacting operations.
The Mackay Bridge was closed to heavy and high-sided vehicles as of 7 a.m., which was impacting some Halifax Transit routes in the area.
Middle Musquodoboit Rurual High School and Island View High School were closed because of power outages, according to HRCE.
The Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education announced all schools were closed Thursday because of widespread power outages in that region.
