Halifax police officer faces extra charge

A Halifax Regional Police officer charged with extorting money from a drug dealer is facing a new count of drug possession.

The charges all stem from an incident on December 10, when Cst. Jeffrey Buchanan allegedly tried to extort more than $5000 from a convicted drug dealer.

As part of the investigation, Police searched a vehicle on December 12 and found marijunana. The additional charge was laid Thursday.

The officer also faces extortion and breach of trust charges, which were laid in December.

He was released on bail by a Justice of the Peace in December, is scheduled to appear on all charges in Halifax Provincial Court on January 26, 2010.
