NS pharmacists given more powers

New rules at Nova Scotia drugstores should make it more convenient for customers.
Effective immediately Nova Scotia pharmacists can refill or adjust a prescription using their own judgment.
“Pharmacists will have legal protections to perform services that they’ve been asked to perform in the past few years,” says Susan Wedlake with the College of Pharmacists.
They can also continue prescriptions for more than 30 days now. The new regulations will ensure patients can get their medicines even if they can’t get a doctor right away.
It’s the latest step in broadening pharmacist’s services, the next one is to have them prescribe drugs for minor illnesses and those standards are expected to be in place by the Fall.
