Council looks at 5-year public transit plan

Council is looking at a report on a five-year plan for public transit in Halifax.
“There’s still a lot of study underway as you know there’s the business case for the harbour link, we have asked a consultant to look at the alternatives,” says Metro Transit GM Pat Soanes.
The report stems from questions and concerns raised by council last Fall, the transit service redesign is the result of an engagement survey with almost 900 respondents.
The five year plan looks to improve rural transit service and also add a downtown shuttle, an extra ferry and a future rail car system.
Mayor Peter Kelly says now they have to figure out how to pay for the plan.
“That’s part of our overall discussion and debate is how to achieve the demand with the financial requirement,” says Kelly.
Councillor Jim Smith is critical of the emphasis on expanding service to rural areas like Fall River, Enfeild and Musquodoboit Harbour. He’s worried the plan would support urban sprawl.
