HRM among several communities getting funds for emergency preparedness

Emergencies are becoming more complex, whether it is environmental challenges or mental health calls, forcing officials to figure out how to better prepare communities.

The province is doling out more than $800,000 to regional emergency management organizations that help people prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies.

The 12 organizations, including one in Halifax Regional Municipality, are set to use the money to support communication, hire staff, rent office spaces, provide training and develop plans.

“Funding emergency response is an investment in safety, resilience and lives,” said Kim Masland, Minister of Emergency Management. “Every dollar spent through this grant strengthens the capacity of an entire region in Nova Scotia.”

The regional emergency management organizations bringing neighbouring municipalities together to help plan and recover from disasters. The funding will span one to four years.

The following groups receiving the funding are in, HRM, Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Digby, Queens, Antigonish, Colchester, Guysborough, Lunenburg, Pictou, Shelburne, Yarmouth, Victoria, Inverness and Richmond counties.

“As we continue to see more frequent and complex emergencies, investing in preparedness has never been more important,”  Elspeth McLean-Wile, Mayor, Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, said in the release.
