Regional fire officials impose total fire ban in HRM

City firefighters have been busy this month responding to grass and brush fires.
and now a ban on open air fires is now in effect throughout HRM
The ban went into effect Tuesday afternoon. Divisional fire chief Mike Lerue says firefighters have responded to nearly 70 such fires since the March 1.
“This time last year I believe we had three for the month of March,” he said.
“We’re at 67 as of now.”
He says conditions have been very ripe for the fires to quickly spread.
“Certainly because it’s been a lot drier and a lot less snow the surface of the ground is really dry,” he said. “That’s causing the fires to take off especially in the wind.”
Lerue says while open air fires are banned, it’s still okay for residents to have fires in chimineas.
