Brindi-the-dog’s life spared by judge

After nearly two years of court dates and thousands of dollars in legal fees the battle over Brindi-the-dog is over.
“I feel good … I’m grateful that I’m going to get her back,” said owner Francesca Rogier Friday. “I’m certainly going to complete training of any kind that is required by the court.”
Although Judge Alanna Murphy spared the dog’s life, it will still be some time before owner Rogier will be able to take the dog home.
Rogier must complete dog ownership training, and Brindi must complete behaviour training. Rogier is due back in court in August to prove the training has worked.
If Brindi is allowed to go home with Rogier, the dog must be under a muzzle when outside, as well as other conditions around who can handle the dog.
Judge Murphy called Rogier’s lack of precautions after the original muzzle order “troubling”.
“Ms. Rogier should have been more diligent,” she says.
Rogier has been fighting a euthanization order for Brindi, after the dog attacked another dog in 2008 when it was supposed to be muzzled.
However in her decision Judge Murphy said she couldn’t think of any other owner who would be more aware of the consequences than Rogier should there be another incident.
She said this is Brindi’s final chance and any further run-ins with the law would almost definitely end in an order to destroy the dog.
Rogier was sentenced to pay a total of $153 in relation to by-law convictions on charges of owning a dog running at large, owning a dog that attacked another animal and failing to comply with a muzzle order.
