Ban drilling forever on Georges Bank: Suzuki

One of the world’s foremost environmental advocates says offshore drilling should never be allowed on Georges Bank.

David Suzuki was in Church Point in Digby County on Saturday for the Universite Sainte-Anne’s spring convocation.

With a June 1 deadline looming for the Dexter government to make a decision on extending or renewing the drilling ban on the Canadian side of Georges Bank, Suzuki tells the Herald the moratorium should be made permanent.

He says the deeper you go with offshore drilling, the greater the risk of a catastrophe like the one in the Gulf of Mexico – and Canada is lucky there hasn’t been more spills from offshore rigs.
