Nova Scotia gets an “F” for orthopedic surgery wait times

A national health care watchdog is giving Nova Scotia failing grades for wait times in two major areas.

The Wait Time Alliance gave Nova Scotia the worst possible grade for orthopedic surgery wait times. That means less than 50 percent of the population gets hip or knee replacement within six months.

The CBC reports the alliance also gave the province a “C” grade for cataract surgery wait times because only 69 percent of patients get surgery within the benchmark of 16 weeks.

Health Minister Maureen MacDonald says improving wait times is a priority.

She also points out that if the report had examined wait times for radiation therapy Nova Scotia would have gotten an “A.”
