Vacant lots in Halifax and Dartmouth will be on council’s agenda Tuesday night. The Capital Ideas Solution report will be looking for development.
The Capital Ideas Solution is a report looking at opportunity sites owned by municipal, provincial or federal governments.
Councillor Dawn Sloane was a guest on Andrew Krystal’s Maritime Morning.
She says there’s a lot of vacant property in HRM.
“In downtown Halifax that equals out to 31 acres of land,” she said. “Over in Dartmouth that equals 14.2 acres of land that are just sitting there!”
Sloane says government needs to start developing these locations, or open them up for private investment.
Paul MacKinnon with Downtown Halifax Business Commission says there’s a lot of talk, but not much action when it comes to construction.
“There’s about 25 developments right now that are well on in the stream, either fully approved or on the cusp of being approved, just in the downtown core,” he said. “I think of those 25 about two or three are actively being worked on.”
Both MacKinnon and Sloane worked on the report that council will be reviewing Tuesday.
