Difficult dairy dispute

With the owners calling it a strike and the union saying it’s a lockout, both sides have their work cut out to resolve the issue at Farmers Cooperative Dairy.

Labour Department spokesman Kevin Finch says both the union and the management did follow the proper process.

He says the process involves working with a Department conciliator. If there is no agreement between the two parties, a report is filed with the Labour Minister and 14 days after that, either side can notify of a strike or lockout. Finch says that final notice has to come 48 hours before action.

Finch adds what’s important right now is finding a settlement to the labour dispute that came to a head last weekend. As far as the issues or any discussions are concerned, Finch says it wouldn’t be appropriate for the Department to comment.
